MILLIGAN, Tenn. (Sept. 30, 2025) – As part of Milligan University’s fall Faculty Lecture Series, Dr. Ryan Lis, assistant professor of sport and exercise science, will present a lecture titled “Soreness and Perceptional Differences Between Two Training Methods.”
The lecture will be held in Derthick Hall’s auditorium on Thursday, Oct. 2, at 6 p.m. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Lis’ lecture presents findings from his most recent research, which is currently in the process of submission for publication in the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research. His research investigates how different programming techniques, specifically variations in muscle contraction types and rest intervals, can impact both physical soreness and psychological perceived efforts within athletes or resistance-trained individuals over one month of endurance strength training.
Lis’ topic is important to his profession of sport and exercise science as it relates to muscle soreness, eccentric contraction types, periodization and resistance training techniques.
“This approach will primarily help student-athletes at Milligan who engage in demanding training of several hours of practice resulting in serious soreness,” said Lis. “This training method may alleviate some of this soreness and may help some individuals stick with a resistance routine better.”
Lis joined Milligan’s faculty as an assistant professor of sport and exercise science and currently serves as co-director of athletic performance. His areas of expertise include sports science, strength and conditioning, and recovery.
Lis completed his Ph.D. in sport physiology at East Tennessee State University in 2024 as well as holding degrees in kinesiology from Louisiana Tech University (M.S.) and Longwood University (B.S.).
His favorite part of serving at Milligan is connecting with student-athletes in class and seeing how the concepts they are learning apply directly to their sports and practices.
The Faculty Lecture Series provides students and other members of the Milligan community with a glimpse into the active world of academic research and writing at Milligan.
