MILLIGAN, Tenn. (Dec. 12, 2023) – Milligan University presented its Fide et Amore award to Dr. Carolyn Carter, associate dean of the William B. Greene, Jr. School of Business and Technology, for her loving and faithful service to the university.
The Fide et Amore award, Milligan’s highest acknowledgement of service, was announced and presented at Milligan’s commencement ceremony held Friday, Dec. 8, in the Mary B. Martin Auditorium located in Seeger Chapel. During the ceremony, Milligan awarded over 70 degrees.
Carter has passionately served Milligan for 40 years, and during her tenure, she established the university’s computer science program, became the chair of the business area, helped create the computer information systems major, has overseen several accreditation processes and has chaired numerous campus committees. As associate dean, Carter has been instrumental in the development of new programs and initiatives, including Milligan’s engineering program. Known for her spirit of servanthood at Milligan, Carter was selected as the Don and Clarinda Jeanes Chair of Servant Leadership upon its establishment in 2011.
Carter received a bachelor of science degree and a master of arts degree in business education from East Tennessee State University. She holds a second master of science degree in computer science education from the University of Evansville and a doctorate in instructional technology from Virginia Tech. Carter was nominated to the Outstanding Young Women of America in 1986 and was an Appalachian College Association Fellow from 1996-1998. Carter is a member of the National Business Education Association and the Association of Computing Machinery.
Stacy Dahlman, associate dean for academic administration and registrar, and Milligan President Dr. Bill Greer wrote the citation for Carter.
“Carolyn’s passion for instilling technical knowledge and skills into her students is legendary. More importantly, though, Carolyn wanted her students to become people whose lives reflected their faith. She taught servant-leadership by example. Few of us have cooked as many meals, spent as many hours advising or invested so personally into the lives of our students as Carolyn Carter.”
For over 20 years, Carter has been married to Milton Carter, who served the university as a recruiter and as community outreach coordinator until his retirement in 2021. Carter will retire in the spring of 2024.
