Milligan Orchestra to perform ‘Shall We Dance?’ on Nov. 4

MILLIGAN, Tenn. (Nov. 1, 2023) – The Milligan University Orchestra, under the direction of Area Chair of Music Dr. Kellie Brown, will present the concert “Shall We Dance?” on Saturday, Nov. 4, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mary B. Martin Auditorium in Seeger Chapel.

The concert will explore the dynamic relationship between dance and music by highlighting the ways composers have written music for staged dance and also used dance forms as inspiration for concert repertoire.

“It’s exciting to explore the many styles and influences of dance through the lens of orchestral music,” shares Brown. “This type of concert also provides a wonderful challenge for the musicians to be flexible as they need to adapt their approach and sound for such a diverse repertoire of music.”

The concert will feature a broad range of pieces including Respighi’s “Ancient Airs and Dances,” William Grant Still’s “Danzas Panama” and Strauss’s “Pizzicato Polka.” In addition, dance-themed pieces from popular music genres will include Joanne Martin’s “Soft Shoe” and Pee Wee King’s “Tennessee Waltz.”

Musical theatre major Anna Shelton will perform Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Shall We Dance?” from the beloved musical “The King and I.”

The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, visit milligan.edu/arts or contact the music office at music@milligan.edu or 423.461.8723.
