The Milligan Orchestra in concert

MILLIGAN UNIVERSITY, Tenn. (March 31, 2022) — The Milligan Orchestra, under the direction of Dr. Kellie Brown, will present a spring concert highlighting centuries of musical excellence from the English repertoire on Saturday, April 9, at 7:30 p.m. in Milligan’s Mary B. Martin Auditorium located in Seeger Chapel.

“The English have always excelled at writing beautifully and idiomatically for string instruments,” said Brown. “It is such a pleasure to present a program that celebrates the wealth of music they have gifted to us.”

Selections will include “Rhosymedre” by Ralph Vaughan Williams, “On the Banks of the Green Willow” by George Butterworth and “Shepherd’s Hey” by Percy Grainger. Special selections of English music for the screen will include John Lunn’s music from Downton Abbey and excerpts from Dario Marianelli’s score for Pride and Prejudice.

The Milligan Concert Choir, directed by Dr. Noah DeLong, also will join the orchestra in performing several English anthems, including “The Lord Is My Shepherd” by Howard Goodall, Handel’s Coronation Anthem No. 2 “Let Thy Hand Be Strengthened” and John Rutter’s “The Lord Is My Light and My Salvation,” which will be performed in memory of the late Thomas Crawford, long-time woodwind professor.

The Milligan Orchestra also will welcome multiple guest performers, including Matthew Brickey, organist at Munsey Memorial United Methodist Church, vocal performance major Katie Cochran and Jamie Buxton, assistant professor of musical theatre.

This concert is free and open to the public. For more information about the concert, visit milligan.edu/arts or call 423.461.8723.
