Milligan announces 2021 Jeanes Scholars

MILLIGAN, Tenn. (March 17, 2021) — Milligan University awarded its most prestigious academic scholarship, the Jeanes Honors Scholarship, to incoming freshmen Seth Bible and Cara Nicholls, both of Telford, Tennessee.

As the 2021 Jeanes Scholars, Bible and Nicholls are recognized for their outstanding academic ability, commitment to scholarly pursuits, sincere Christian faith and their service to others.

“Over the course of their four years, the Jeanes Scholars serve as the face of Milligan’s Honors Program,” said Dr. Michael Blouin, co-director of the Milligan Honors Program. “Our program offers an intentional community for motivated students who wish to reach their full potential. Members of this group challenge one another to excel both inside the classroom and as servant-leaders on a world stage.”

Bible, a senior at David Crockett High School, participated in various clubs and organizations during high school. He served as the president of the key club and vice president of the drama club. He also participated in the French club and Students for Christ. Bible was recognized as a French honor student, an AP Scholar and a member of the ACT 30+ club. He is the son of Douglas and Melissa Bible.

Having achieved multiple all-conference honors as a high school golfer, Bible will join Milligan’s golf team next year.

“I always wanted to go to a Christian university, stay close to home and play golf collegiately,” said Bible. “At Milligan, I found all three—a faith-based education with a fantastic faculty, a short trip to and from home, and I get to continue playing the game I love for Coach Wallingford.”

Bible plans to major in history and participate in Milligan’s Student Government Association and Vespers, a student-led worship service.

Cara Nicholls will graduate this year from Home Life Academy, and during her high school career, she enrolled in dual-enrollment courses at Milligan. She appreciates her experiences as a homeschooled student,  an active volunteer with her church and as a member of the choir. Nicholls is an avid hiker and looks forward to remaining close to the Appalachian Trail. She is the daughter of Layne and Julie Nicholls.

At Milligan, Nicholls is considering a double major in chemistry and business with a minor in Spanish. She will participate in Milligan’s vocal programs and hopes to study abroad through the Honors Program.

“I was fortunate to take two dual-enrollment classes at Milligan, and I appreciated the tightly knit student body, the personal interaction with my professors and the ability to learn from a biblical worldview,” shared Nicholls. “I am honored to be a Jeanes Honor Scholar and excited for my next four years at Milligan. One of my goals, as part of Milligan’s Honors Program, is to study abroad in a Spanish-speaking country to further my fluency and cultural literacy.”

Named in memory of former president Dr. Donald Jeanes, the Jeanes Scholarships are full-tuition, merit-based academic awards that are part of the Honors Program. This scholarship provides an advanced opportunity for high-achieving students from all majors to deepen their intellectual scholarship, leadership and service.

Upcoming college freshmen who are interested in the Milligan Honors Program and honors scholarships for fall 2022 must be admitted and submit the Honors Program application by December 1, 2021. Candidates for honors scholarships are selected based on high school GPA and ACT/SAT-I scores.
