Milligan artwork returns to Dos Gatos

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Jan. 29, 2020) — In February, Milligan’s fine arts, photography and graphic design students will return to Dos Gatos Coffee Bar in Johnson City, Tennessee, to display their work in the exhibit, “Two Cats + A Herd of Buffalo.”

The show’s opening night and reception will coincide with downtown Johnson City’s First Friday, Feb. 7, and will occur from 6-8 p.m. The event is free and open to the public. Artwork will remain on display at Dos Gatos through Monday, Feb. 24.

“Our students are excited to exhibit their latest creative works in downtown Johnson City again this year,” said Art Brown, assistant professor of communications and graphic design. “First Friday is an excellent opportunity for their artwork to be included in our thriving regional art scene. We are thankful for the support of Dos Gatos and their owner, Dick Nelson.”

The show highlights the creativity of Milligan’s graphic design and fine arts majors, and it will include paintings, drawings, photography, mixed media and graphic design. The exhibit will feature approximately 40 pieces, each produced in one of Milligan’s photography, studio art or graphic design courses.

Sophomore graphic design major Sydney Rhoton is excited to have her works included in the show for the second year.

“Last year, I only submitted one piece of work from my fundamental design classes, and this year, I will submit more pieces across several mediums,” shared Rhoton. “It’s neat to see our work in downtown Johnson City. I brought my family to Dos Gatos last year, and I know they will return this year to enjoy the variety of art on display.”

Milligan’s comprehensive graphic design curriculum blends creativity and industry-standard software with theoretical issues, critical analysis and practical skills to teach students visual communication and problem-solving. The Milligan fine arts department offers five areas of emphasis: music, art, photography, cinema and theatre arts. All fine arts majors emphasize the appreciation and knowledge of human creativity and are designed to educate the whole person from a distinctly Christian perspective.
