Dr. Maureen Knechtel is an associate professor and the academic coordinator for the physician assistant program. She holds a Doctor of Medical Science from the University of Lynchburg and earned both a Master of Physician Assistant Studies and a Bachelor of Science in health science from Duquesne University. In addition to her roles at Milligan University, she continues to work clinically as a cardiology physician assistant at the Ballad Health Cardiovascular Associates Heart Institute, and she has served as an assistant professor at the Lincoln Memorial University-Debusk College of Osteopathic Medicine PA program in the past.

She has published research specific to atrial fibrillation management and has authored and edited numerous medical textbooks with Springer Publishing. She has been a national speaker on a variety of cardiovascular and medical education topics and is a faculty member with the MedAxiom Cardiovascular Academy. She was named the 2021 Tennessee Academy of Physician Assistants Educator of the Year for the State of Tennessee. Dr. Knechtel and her husband David have two children and reside in Johnson City, TN.
