Farmer holds a bachelor of arts degree from Haverford College (1983), a master of arts degree from the Divinity School of the University of Chicago (1984) and a Ph.D. in religion from Duke University (1992). He has authored The Gospel of John in the Sixteenth Century (Oxford University Press, 1997) and has edited the Reformation Commentary on Scripture: John 1-12 (InterVarsity Press, 2014). His areas of interest and expertise include church history and the history of biblical interpretation.

Farmer teaches Sunday School and directs the choir at Hopwood Memorial Christian Church. He and his wife Margaret have three children: Adam, Peter, and Claire Jing Lin.
