Beck holds a bachelor of arts degree from Lambuth College (1976), a master of arts degree in sociology from Memphis State University (1980) and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Florida (1986). Prior to joining Milligan’s faculty, she served as a research associate in the Department of Family Medicine at East Tennessee State University’s research division. She was primarily involved in research with the Johnson County Health Survey. In the past, Beck has taught sociology courses at several colleges including ETSU and Virginia Intermont. She has published a number of scholarly articles in several journals such as the Journal of Marriage and the Family, Journal of Family Issues, Journal of Rural Health and the Southern Sociologist.
