Milligan College will host its 2018 Homecoming celebration on Oct. 26 and 27, welcoming alumni back to the campus to join students and members of the campus community in the annual parade, 5K run/walk and music and theater performances.

Theresa Garbe, director of alumni relations, said the annual events are “an exciting opportunity for parents, students and alumni and their families to come together and enjoy our campus.”

“It’s something people look forward to every year. Some people travel long distances every year for our Homecoming event,” she said, adding that the campus is expecting about 700 attendees.

On Oct. 26 at 6:30 p.m., the annual “Celebrate Milligan” dinner will honor several Milligan alumni and friends for their achievements and contributions.

Oct. 27 will begin with the Associated Ladies for Milligan’s annual Buffalo 5K Run/2.5K walk, sponsored by Workspace Interiors. The race starts at 8 a.m. at Steve Lacy Fieldhouse. All proceeds from the race will benefit student scholarships.

“Saturday is our big day,” Garbe said.

After the race, an exhibition titled “Cycles of Cynicism,” by alumnus Robert “Ty” Lee will open at 11 a.m. in the Milligan Art Gallery in Derthick Hall. This exhibit, which will run through Nov. 20, will include surreal collages that explore social values, religion, feminism and morality.

At 1:30 p.m., the annual Homecoming parade will make its way down Blowers Boulevard and lead into the festival on Derthick Lawn, which will include inflatables and children’s activities.

At 3:30 p.m., the college’s music department will perform a short concert titled “Golden Oldies,” showcasing music from the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s, including the Beach Boys, Elvis and the Beatles.

This concert also will feature the Milligan Concert Choir, Women’s Chorale, Heritage, Heard Mentality and Orchestra.

Other events include “mini-lectures” from Christy Isbell, professor of occupational therapy; John Jackson, professor of Bible and humanities; and Kenny Suit, associate professor of cinema.

Isbell’s lecture, “Sensory Integration: What Everyone Should Know,” will begin at 10:30 a.m. Suit and Jackson’s presentation, “Finding Faith at the Movies,” will begin at 2 p.m.

“They’re an educational opportunity for alumni and parents. It gives our faculty an opportunity to talk more about their areas of interest,” Garbe said.

All meal events, theater performances and the walk/run are ticketed events, while the remaining events are free and open to the public.
