Milligan presents original play celebrating 150 years

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Sept. 30, 2016) — An original, family-friendly play dramatizing Milligan College’s 150-year history will premiere at the college’s annual Homecoming weekend, Oct. 20-23, a culmination of Milligan’s year-long sesquicentennial celebration.

“Forward with Faith: The Milligan College Story,” written and directed by Milligan alumna Rosemarie Shields (’59), celebrates 150 years of Milligan history from its early days as the Buffalo Male and Female Institute to its current status as a nationally-recognized Christian liberal arts college. Show times are Oct. 20 and 22, 7:30 p.m., and Oct. 23, 2:30 p.m., in Milligan’s McGlothlin-Street Theatre located in the Gregory Center. All seats are $5 at the Milligan Bookstore, 423.461.8733.

“This play is Milligan’s history come alive,” said Shields, who has a long history at the college, teaching and working in various positions, as well as producing Milligan’s theatrical productions over the years. “I wanted to tell the stories of men and women whose faith in God enabled them to lead the school ‘forward ever.’”

“Forward with Faith” will feature multimedia elements, like archival photos of real Milligan locations projected behind the actors, as well as a lobby display that provides more historical context for the events in the play.

“People who don’t know the history of the college not only will learn more about Milligan, but the Northeast Tennessee region as well,” said Shields, who did extensive research for the play. “For those already familiar with the college’s history, the play will evoke many personal memories.”
