Milligan senior recital features wide range of music and theatre

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Sept. 15, 2015) – Milligan College senior Laura Mixon, of Kingsport, Tennessee, will combine her studies in musical theatre and opera for her senior voice recital on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 7:30 p.m. in the Mary B. Martin Auditorium located in Seeger Chapel. This event is free and open to the public.

Mixon will perform works by Bernstein, Debussy, Schubert, Strauss and more while portraying a wide range of characters from a crazed diva to a love-sick young man.

“Laura came to Milligan as a strong and self-motivated musician, but over the last three-and-a-half years, she has blossomed into a mature performer, capable of taking on graduate-level repertoire,” said Dr. Charlotte Anderson, assistant professor of the practice of music and Mixon’s mentor. “At Milligan, senior recital is an opportunity for voice students to perform in the genre of classical art song and opera. Through her love of acting, Laura enriches that style with colorful characterizations.”

In addition to her vocal studies, Mixon has been active in the college’s theatre productions and has been a member of several ensembles including Concert Choir, Orchestra, Women’s Chorale and Heritage. In 2014, she was the recipient of the Milligan Outstanding Music Student Award.

This summer, she studied and performed opera in Prague as part of a study abroad opportunity. Mixon hopes to attend graduate school for musical theatre and opera.
