Milligan’s Alpha Chi named Star Chapter

Alpha ChiMILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (Dec. 18, 2014) — Milligan College’s chapter of Alpha Chi, Tennessee Nu, has been named a Star Chapter for 2013-2014 by Alpha Chi, the national college honor scholarship society. Of the organization’s over 300 chapters across the country, only 47 were given this recognition.

“It is a huge honor for Tennessee Nu,” said Dr. Lori Mills, professor of psychology and chapter sponsor. “Our students have worked very hard to meet the criteria and earn our designation as a Star Chapter.”

Alpha Chi is an honor society that admits students from all academic disciplines and actively promotes academic excellence, undergraduate and graduate research, campus academic dialogue and civic engagement.

“Admittance into the college’s Alpha Chi chapter is a major accomplishment for students,” said Mills. “In order to be eligible for membership, a student’s GPA must be in the top 10 percent of the junior or senior class.”

But the organization isn’t just looking at grades.

“Each student must be affirmed by the faculty as having good character, a core value at Milligan which encourages students to be servant leaders,” said Mills.

In order for a college to receive Star Chapter status, it must meet criteria including inducting members locally, nominating at least one student for a national Alpha Chi fellowship or scholarship, and sponsoring at least one on-campus program in promotion of scholarship.

Chapters must also send at least one faculty member and one student to the annual convention, as well as have at least one student presentation on the convention program.

At the 2014 Alpha Chi National Convention, three Milligan students made presentations including Kerri Beth Slaughter, junior; Anneke Snyder, spring 2014 graduate; and Thomas Wampler, fall 2014 graduate. Snyder received a $100 presentation prize in the area of education for her paper titled “El Sueño Americano: A Study of Why Latinos Are Underrepresented in Higher Education.”

There are 35 students in Milligan’s chapter of Alpha Chi. Sponsors include Mills; Dr. John Jackson, associate professor of Bible and humanities; Mary Jackson, research and instruction librarian; Tony Jones, dean of students; and Dr. Robert Mahan, professor of accounting. Mahan and Mills also serve on Alpha Chi’s National Council.
