OT Expo exhibits innovative ideas for everyday people
MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (March 28, 2014) — Milligan College’s master of science in occupational therapy program (MSOT) will host its Occupational Therapy Expo on Wednesday, April 16, from 3-7 p.m. in Milligan’s Gregory Center for the Liberal Arts. It is free and open to the public.
The Expo will give the community a chance to see creations of new or improved adapted equipment, assessments, promotional materials, books and training materials made by second-year occupational therapy students. Continuing education credit is available for licensed occupational therapists who attend the expo.
“Year after year, the OT Expo appeals to a broad audience ― from parents of young children to caregivers of adults,” said Dr. Jil Smith, associate professor of occupational therapy. “The projects work across the lifespan, and the creations make everyday life more comfortable.”
This year, 30 students will exhibit their projects. At the conclusion of the expo, the OT students donate their projects to various agencies and patients. Last year, Duke University’s Lenox Baker Children’s Hospital received one of the projects, while others went to local organizations and individuals.
Occupational therapists work with all ages in a variety of settings. They develop interventions that address individual struggles with physical, cognitive, emotional and sensory concerns. The expo will provide more information about the services occupational therapists provide to individuals and the community.
“The Expo is a comprehensive learning activity that prepares these soon-to-be occupational therapists to be creative and resourceful in designing interventions and equipment to assist their future patients in any therapy setting,” Smith said. “The students worked very hard to create individualized products that represented occupational therapy, as well as their own practice interests and knowledge.”
