‘Art from the Buffalo School’ opens Feb. 7 at Nelson Fine Art

knudtsen_drawingMILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (Jan. 27, 2014) — The Nelson Fine Art Center in downtown Johnson City will feature an exclusive exhibition of art and photography work by Milligan College fine arts students.

The exhibit is titled “Art from the Buffalo School.” Opening night along with a reception will be Friday, Feb. 7, from 7–9 p.m., with the exhibit on display throughout the month of February. It is free and open to the public.

Students will present their photography, paintings, drawings, mixed media and graphic design in the exhibit.

“This annual event is always a great experience for the students who get to showcase their artwork,” said Alice Anthony, associate professor of art at Milligan. “It brings about positive feedback and really benefits the students as they learn how to display their work to the public.”

Milligan senior Krista Knudtsen looks forward to the annual “Art from the Buffalo School” because of the exposure and experience it provides. One of her pieces in this year’s exhibit, a charcoal and pastel drawing titled “Lost My Train of Thought,” includes a nod to her childhood, which was spent in the Philippines.

On the drawing, Knudtsen included the word “panunot,” which means “thought” in Ilokano, a language from the Philippines that she grew up speaking.

“Art shows such as this one provide Milligan students with an opportunity to showcase their personal expression by displaying artwork in the community,” Knudtsen said. “The show allows students to experience what it is like to be involved in a professional exhibit, and even get a chance to sell their own work.”

The Milligan fine arts department offers five areas of emphasis: art, film studies, music, photography and theater. All fine arts majors are designed to educate the whole person while increasing the student’s appreciation and knowledge of human creativity.
