Master of Science in Counseling - School Counseling

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (March 22, 2013) — Milligan College will host a “Lunch & Learn” event for school counselors and principals on Tuesday, April 16, from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Milligan’s McMahan Student Center.

The event includes lunch and educational sessions presented by Milligan’s faculty experts who are known regionally and nationally for their work. The lunch is free, but pre-registration is required by April 5.

Three specialized sessions ranging from mental wellness to test anxiety will be offered to provide guests with information they can use in their educational roles.

Dr. Rebecca Sapp, assistant professor of counseling and psychology, will present a session for elementary counselors. She will speak about “Mental Wellness and Early Intervention of Mental Health Problems in Elementary School-age Children.” Sapp has a master’s degree in marriage and family therapy from East Tennessee State University and a Ph.D. in social work from the University of Tennessee. She also is a licensed marital and family therapist, and has worked at Frontier Health, a local community mental health center.

The session for secondary counselors will be led by Dr. John-Paul Abner, associate professor of occupational therapy, psychology and counseling. His session is titled “Reducing Test Anxiety and Increasing Performance on College Entrance Exams.” He has master of science and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Florida. In addition, he is a licensed clinical psychologist who was named executive director of the board of Parent Child Interaction Therapy International. In February, he presented a 10-hour workshop that was filmed in Miami, Fla., for mass distribution on the Internet as part of Division 53’s effort to promote evidence-based treatment.

Finally, principals will meet with Dr. Lyn C. Howell, chair of Milligan’s education area. Her session is titled “Mentoring Teachers.” Howell has a master of science degree from University of La Verne (California), an M.Ed. from Georgia Southwestern and a Ph.D. from the University of New Mexico. In addition to her work in higher education, Howell has taught high school in seven states from Alaska to Florida.

In addition to the educational sessions, participants will have an opportunity to learn more about Milligan’s graduate programs in education and counseling.

The master of education (M.Ed.) program includes both initial licensure and advanced degree options. The initial licensure degree is typically a 15-month professional educational program that allows students to earn their teaching certificate or license and their degree. The advanced program is for current teachers seeking professional development and their master’s degree. The advanced M.Ed. program is a hybrid of online and on-campus options, allowing students the convenience of online courses and the opportunity to interact face to face with the knowledgeable, caring education faculty.

The MSC is Milligan’s newest graduate program. The counseling program offers concentrations in school counseling and clinical mental health counseling. In addition, Milligan recently signed a cooperative agreement with Emmanuel Christian Seminary to offer a certificate of graduate study in counseling ministry.
