MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (Oct. 11, 2012)—The Mountain Empire Children’s Choral Academy and Milligan College will host a concert on Saturday, Oct. 20, at 4 p.m. in Milligan’s Mary B. Martin Auditorium of Seeger Memorial Chapel. The concert is free and open to the public.
Singers in grades 4-12 will showcase their talents at the concert after participating in an all-day vocal workshop at Milligan specifically geared for young male singers. The workshop offers the singers an opportunity to improve their vocal skills while experiencing the unique camaraderie of working with other young men.
“The Milligan music department is excited to partner with the Mountain Empire Children’s Choral Academy to offer this one-of-a-kind experience to encourage and develop young male singers from throughout our region,” said Noah DeLong, assistant professor of music at Milligan. “The final concert will be a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the vocal talents of these young men.”
The clinician will be Vincent Oakes, the artistic director of the Chattanooga Boys Choir, a public non-profit performing and educational organization founded in 1954.
Oakes is also the director of choral music at the Baylor School, a day and boarding secondary school for grades 6-12 in Chattanooga Tenn., where he teaches, as well as conducts four student choirs and a faculty choir.
Special guest performers include Milligan’s all-male group, Heard Mentality; King College’s All the King’s Men; and the Highlands Youth Ensemble’s MECCA Men.
Several musical styles will be presented in the concert, including Baroque, Jewish, African, American folk and bluegrass music. The concert also will feature pieces of music arranged by Oakes, including “Down to the River to Pray,” “Angel Band” and “Think of Me.”
