Awards ceremony honors Milligan students

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 26, 2012) — Milligan College’s Awards Convocation on Thursday, April 26, was a special day for many Milligan students who were honored for their accomplishments this past year. More than 60 awards and scholarships were announced by the faculty and administration during the annual ceremony.

Shannon Slaughter, a senior from Gray, Tenn., received the year’s most distinguished award, the Ivor Jones Outstanding Senior Award. Slaughter also received a Business Administration Award and was named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

The Ivor Jones Outstanding Senior Awardrecipient is nominated by the faculty. The award is presented each year to a graduating senior who demonstrates outstanding performance in service to the college, potential for continuing the objectives of the college, academic record, and participation in college life.

Slaughter, who served as the Student Government Association president for two years, will graduate May 5 with a degree in business and communications. She is the daughter of Chris and Angie Slaughter.

Other local students receiving awards include:

The Board of Trustees/Board of Advisors Award for Outstanding Female Athlete was presented to Rachel Martin of Blountville, and Gillian Giffen of Knoxville. Martin also earned the Biology Award and was named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

In the business area, Sarah Green, of Bristol, Va., was presented with the Accounting Award and named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. The Computer Information Systems Award was presented to two Kingsport residents — Michael Ezike (traditional program) and Gary “Brent” Edwards (mobile program). Ryan Green of Elizabethton was presented the Legal Studies Award.

The Performing and Visual Arts Outstanding Student Scholarship is awarded each year to a rising junior or senior fine arts major who has a minimum 3.0 GPA and who also has found significant ways to connect to the many facets of Milligan’s fine arts program. This year’s recipient was Danielle Moore of Unicoi. Moore also earned the French Award.

Lindsey Campbell of Mountain City earned the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award for Communication. Kelsey Ellis of Bristol, Tenn., was recognized with a Senior Fine Arts Award.

In the education area, the Delta Kappa Gamma Outstanding Teaching Award was presented to Janey Robinson of Elizabethton. Robinson also earned the History Award. Jennifer Berry of Johnson City was the recipient of the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award in EducationUndergraduate Student Teaching Awards were presented to Ryan White of Knoxville and Seth Grindstaff of Elizabethton.

The Human Performance and Exercise Science PE Award was presented to Chelsea Spivey of Gate City.

Timothy Laurio of Jonesborough received awards for his achievements in English and the Concert Choir. He also was named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges. Lacie Black of Jonesborough received theGerman Award.

Dillon Whittington of Gray was presented with the Orchestra Award.

The Outstanding Student Scholarship Award in Nursing was presented to Tiffany Weinbender of Elizabethton. Richard Thomas Wampler, also of Elizabethton, earned the Freshman Chemistry Award.

The Psychology Award was presented to Mandy Oaks of Watauga, while Katie Crumley of Gray earned the Public Leadership and Service Award.

Other local students named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges include Corri Richardson of Kingsport, Lucas Schmidt of Jonesborough and Adam Tomlinson of Milligan College.

Dr. Vikki Sitter, associate professor of business administration, and Mary Jackson, research and instruction librarian, were honored with Faculty and Staff Appreciation Awards, presented by Milligan’s Student Government Association.

Other award recipients include:

Ben Richardson of Darlington, Md., was presented with the Dennis Bratton Servant Leadership Award. This award recognizes a student for service in the community and on campus, excellence in Christian character, evidence of Christian service in a local church and advocacy for change to improve society. The award was established by Hugh Jones and is named in honor of Dennis Bratton, senior minister at Christ’s Church in Jacksonville, Fla., and a member of the Milligan College Board of Trustees. Richardson also earned the Paul Clark Teacher Education Award, the History Award and a place in Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges.

In the Bible area, awards were presented to Tommy Parker of Manteno, Ill. (Award for Outstanding Promise in Christian Education); John Meding of Mooresville, Ind. (Earl R. Stuckenbruck Award for Excellence in Greek); David Lawler of Forked River, N.J. (Fred and Esther Meding Honorary Award for Preaching); Rebecca Miller of Smyrna, Del. (Outstanding Student Scholarship Award in Biblical Learning); and Taylor Ross of Fallston, Md. (Stone-Campbell Journal Promising Scholar Award).

Receiving awards from Milligan’s Board of Trustees/Board of Advisors were Rachel Watson, of Seminole, Fla., who was named Outstanding Academic Student, and Andrew Stewart of Great Britain, named Outstanding Male Athlete. Watson also earned the Human Performance and Exercise Science Award, while Stewart received the Human Performance and Exercise Science PE Award.

The Eugene P. Price Excellence in Business Studies Award was presented to Penny Gindlesperger of Bethel Park, Penn.The Outstanding Student Scholarship Award in Business was presented to Nate Andrew of Pittsburgh, Penn.

The Johnson City Press Tom Hodge Journalism Scholarship was presented to Sydney Franklin of Louisville, Ky. Sydney Bickers of Savoy, Ill., earned the Tri-Cities Society of Professional Journalists Scholarship.

In the humanities area, Megg Jones of Mason, Ohio, earned the English Award. Anneke Snyder of Olmito, Texas, earned the Humanities Award. Katie Cachiaras of Rochester, Minn., was presented with the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award in Humane Learning and the Spanish Award.

In the music area, Erin Raines of Mechanicsville, Va., was recognized with the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award in Music, while Lauren Holt of Whitesburg, Tenn., was presented with the Women’s Chorale Award.

Jessica Koonapareddy of India, received the Senior Nursing Award. Bailey Bolten of Louisville, Ky., earned the Lone L. Sisk Award. The Outstanding Student Scholarship Award in Scientific Learning was presented to Bryan McDowell of Evansville, Ind. Chris Dove of Derwood, Md., earned the Mathematics Award and the Outstanding Student Scholarship Award in Social Learning.

This year’s Distinguished Service Award presented by Milligan’s Student Government Association went to Gretchen Allie of Charlotte, N.C. The Student Development Leadership Award was presented to Lauren Tomlinson of Monticello, Ill.

Rachel Severns of Fort Smith, Alaska, was presented with the Child Life AwardThe Service-Learning Student Awardwent to Jessie Davis of Frederick, Md., and the Sociology Award was given to Helen Biard of Asheville, N.C.

Other students named to Who’s Who Among Students in American Universities and Colleges include Stephen Feryus of Fallston, Md., and Emma Rees of Redford, Mich.
