Milligan’s a cappella groups to perform joint concert

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (April 10, 2012) — Milligan College’s a cappella groups, Heritage and Heard Mentality, will present their first ever joint concert on Sunday, April 15, at 7 p.m. in the McGlothlin-Street Theatre of the Gregory Center for Liberal Arts. This event is free and open to the public.

Heritage is Milligan’s premier traveling ensemble. They have sung for many churches, community and civic groups, and regularly represent the college around the country. Noah DeLong, assistant professor of music, serves as the group’s director.

Heard Mentality is an all-male quartet directed by Dr. Charlotte Anderson, assistant professor of the practice of music at Milligan.
“This concert will represent the culmination of a year’s worth of intense rehearsals for both Heritage and Heard Mentality,” DeLong said. “We are excited to share this music with the Milligan community.”

Heritage and Heard Mentality are a cappella groups, meaning their music features only the human voice with no instrumental accompaniment. A cappella music creates a unique immediacy and connection between the performers and the audience and encompasses a wide range of styles, as will be evident at the concert. Several different musical genres will be sung throughout the night from sacred hymns and spirituals to vocal jazz and pop a cappella.  The night will culminate with a joint performance by the groups of “Ave Maria,” written by Franz Biebl.

“Both groups are active throughout the year representing Milligan at churches and civic events around the region,” DeLong said. “We thought it would be a great opportunity to have both groups join together to showcase their music right here on campus.”
