Milligan celebrates Black History Month with guest speaker

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (February 8, 2010) – To celebrate and raise awareness of Black History Month, Aaron T. Murphy, youth pastor at Thankful Baptist Church in Johnson City, Tenn., will speak at Milligan College on Thursday, Feb. 11, at 11 a.m. in Seeger Memorial Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.

Murphy is currently pursuing a master of divinity degree from Emmanuel School of Religion (ESR). He also serves as advisor of the “Impact Christian Movement Organization” at East Tennessee State University, where he leads weekly Bible studies and community service projects.

Murphy holds a bachelor’s degree from East Tennessee State University in construction engineering and technology and worked with Robins & Morton Construction Company prior to joining the staff at Thankful Baptist.

The tradition of celebrating Black history began in 1926 with Harvard historian, Dr. Carter G. Woodson. What began as a one-week celebration was expanded in 1976 to include the entire month of February.
