Photography exhibit features local landmarks

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. (February 5, 2010) – A photography exhibit capturing the beauty and history found in and around local landmarks opens Friday, Feb. 12, at Milligan College.

The exhibit, highlighting the work of Milligan photography minors Shanna Raines and Shauna Zeigler, will run through Feb. 20 in the Milligan Art Gallery, located in the lower level of Derthick Hall. There will be an opening reception on Feb. 14, from 2-4 p.m. The exhibit is free and open to the public.

Raines, a Johnson City native, found her inspiration close to home – in the interesting and unique features of the small town of Watauga, Tenn. Her show features a series of photographs from Watauga including photos of Tennessee’s oldest business, St. John’s Mill.

“I see something that on first glance may seem ordinary, but I like to try and photograph something simple in a way that makes it worthy of a second look” said Raines, a senior communications major.

Zeigler, Kingsport native, will include images from her 2009 Kingsport photojournalism project, “Icons of a Model City.” Her exhibit at Milligan is titled “Writing with Light.”

“Light is the most essential aspect of photography, and an understanding of light is a necessary quality of a photographer,” said Zeigler, a communications major at Milligan.

In 2009, Zeigler’s photographs were published in Photographer’s Forum’s “The Best of College Photography” and in Milligan’s annual literary and arts journal, “Phoenix.” Her work was also included in the CPI Corporation’s outstanding photographs of the week webpage in 2008.
