Milligan hosts former Vanderbilt athlete

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (January 27, 2010) – Doug Humphreys, a former Vanderbilt University football player, spoke to a full house of Milligan College athletes, coaches and students on Tuesday, Jan. 26, at the college’s first Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) event of 2010.

Humphreys graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1978, where he was a four-year letterman and two-year starter on the football team. As an offensive guard, Humphreys valued his playing experience, especially Vanderbilt’s prized visit to the Peach Bowl in 1974. Humphreys is currently part owner and president of Red River Coal Company in Norton, Va.

Humphreys attended the FCA event to encourage and challenge the athletes’ approach to life.

“I am here for one reason and one reason only – to say God loves you and to see if I can make a difference,” Humphreys said.

He challenged the athletes to find a purpose in their lives and to leave a legacy by making good decisions and living an obedient life for Jesus Christ.

Humphreys highlighted the importance of an athlete’s accountability as a Christian leader in the community. He urged the students to find an accountability partner, one who shares their vision and can push them to achieve it.

“Gratitude is the healthiest emotion you can have,” Humphreys said. “Give thanks in all circumstances.”

Earlier in the evening, Humphreys addressed the Milligan coaching staff about making a difference in athletes’ lives. He stressed the importance of spiritually influencing athletes, in addition to nurturing their physical and mental development.

“Doug did a great job in speaking to the coaches,” said Wes Holly, head softball coach. “One thing that really impressed me about him was that he really gave the Lord credit and put God first and at the center of his life.”
