Pastor, educator to speak at Milligan in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (January 13, 2010) – Joe Maddox, pastor of New Hope Missionary Baptist Church in Knoxville, Tenn., will speak about Christian service, leadership and the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., at Milligan College on Tuesday, Jan. 19, at 11 a.m. in Seeger Memorial Chapel. The event is free and open to the public.

Maddox has served as pastor of New Hope since 1986. A former deputy field office director with the Office of Surface Mining in Knoxville, Maddox retired from his secular job in 1994 to pursue a full-time ministerial career. The change allowed him to focus on education for community and foreign discipleship.

In 2001, Maddox founded the Knoxville Interdenominational Bible Institute. The school targets Christian workers who are willing to study at night to develop or enhance their skills. He develops curricula and manages a teaching staff there.

He is the vice moderator of education for the Knoxville District Baptist Missionary and Educational Association and the director of evangelism for the Tennessee Baptist Missionary Education Convention. He has also served as president of the Oak Ridge (Tennessee) Chapter of the National Association of the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
