Milligan Concert Choir to perform at local church


MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (Nov. 20, 2007) — The Milligan College Concert Choir will perform at Memorial Presbyterian Church on Sunday, December 2, at 6 p.m. The church is located at 100 East F Street, Elizabethton.

The choir is a mixed group of 31 students from throughout the United States and Brazil. They will sing various styles of choral music, from classical to contemporary. The first portion of the concert will include hymn settings and American Spirituals. The latter portion of the evening will be devoted to selections for the Advent and Christmas season. Numerous well-known selections are included in the concert.

Many of the students in the choir are music majors or minors who plan careers in music education or in music and worship ministry. Various other majors are also represented in the group.

The Milligan choir upholds a long tradition as an outstanding college choir. At the invitation of the President, the choir has sung at the National Prayer Breakfast in Washington, DC, and toured throughout England, with special performances in Coventry Cathedral and in the Civic Centre of the City of Birmingham.

More recently, the Milligan College Concert Choir has sung at the Conference on World Evangelism-National Missionary Convention and the Tennessee State Convention of the American Choral Directors’ Association.

The Milligan Concert Choir is under the direction of John Wakefield, associate professor of music at Milligan. Wakefield is a veteran of many years as a choral conductor in Illinois, California and Ohio. He is active in the American Choral Directors Association, National Association of Teachers of Singing, the National Church Music Conference, and The Hymn Society of the United States and Canada.
