Moultrie to head Milligan diversity services

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 17, 2007) — Milligan College has named Nathaniel Moultrie of Bristol, Tenn., director of the college’s new Office of Diversity Services. In his role Moultrie will work to develop programs and initiatives to enhance and promote a social, cultural and educational environment that embraces ethnic diversity.

Last fall Milligan College President Don Jeanes announced that the college planned to make a more concerted effort to build a healthy and ethnically diverse learning environment. The college introduced a scholarship for traditionally underrepresented students from Tennessee, appointed Rev. C. Danny Johnson as the first African-American on the college’s Board of Trustees, and made plans to establish an Office of Diversity Services.

“We have long believed that ethnic diversity is essential to our educational and Christian mission,” said Jeanes. “But we have not seen much growth in this area. We realized we needed to be more intentional with our efforts. We are fortunate to be able to draw from Nathaniel’s past experience in this arena.”

Moultrie brings to the position a wealth of knowledge in diversity services. As a clinical supervisor at the University of Northern Iowa, he recruited minority students for the graduate school, taught a “Studies in Multicultural Writing” course, and founded a student organization at a local high school to serve students of color. Most recently, he led multicultural initiatives as a manager with Citigroup.

Moultrie, who holds a bachelor of arts degree in English education from Florida A&M University and a master of education degree from the University of Northern Iowa, most recently worked with HSBC Bank/Beneficial in Gray, Tenn., as a sales manager. He also is a volunteer youth leader at this church in Bristol.

“This new role represents an opportunity to serve in a capacity that strengthens and broadens our campus,” said Moultrie. “I am honored to be a part of a ministry that is embracing and celebrating diversity.

“True unity is best accomplished through the sharing and exchange of divergent cultural backgrounds, ideas, and personal experiences. Every team or family is fortified by its areas of specialty or differences and I am excited to be a part of the Milligan team/family to help build a broader community of servant-leaders that will impact our world for Christ.”

A campus-wide welcome reception will be held for Moultrie on Wednesday, April 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. in the lower level of McMahan Student Center.
