Milligan art on display in local gallery

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (February 2, 2006) — The Nelson Fine Art Center in downtown Johnson City will feature an exclusive exhibition of art and photography work by Milligan College fine arts students throughout the month of February.

The exhibit is titled “Art from the Buffalo School.” Opening night along with a reception will be this Friday, Feb. 3, from 7 – 9 p.m., with the exhibit on display throughout the month of February.

The first Friday of each month, Johnson City’s Main Street is closed as the businesses celebrate the arts. This is the third year Milligan College art and photography students have participated in the “First Friday” celebration.

“The fine arts major at Milligan encourages students to strive for the highest standard of artistic excellence,” said Alice Anthony, assistant professor of art. “They are very gifted and talented artists and we’re happy to have their work featured at the Nelson Gallery.”

The Milligan College fine arts department offers four areas of emphasis: art, photography, music and theatre. All fine arts majors are designed to educate the whole person while increasing the student’s appreciation and knowledge of human creativity.

The Nelson Art Gallery began as the Lady Bug Gallery in 1973. Over the past 20 years it has evolved into an exhibit featuring 500 to 1,000 pieces of art at any given time and completing hundreds of custom framing projects for individual and commercial clients each year. The gallery boasts 8,000 square feet dedicated to the presentation of Southern Appalachian art and craft, custom framing, art supplies and beads and regional exhibits for public view.

The exhibit’s opening night and reception, as well as the presentation throughout the month of February, are free and open to the public.
