Chicago Cubs baseball player to speak at Milligan

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN ( January 27, 2006 ) — Chicago Cubs left fielder Matt Murton will address Milligan College Fellowship of Student Athletes (FCA) on Feb. 1 at 7:30 p.m. in Wilson Auditorium, Hardin Hall, on the Milligan College campus. The event is open to the campus community.

Murton, originally from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., attended Georgia Tech and was a first-round draft pick in 2003 to the Red Socks where he was considered one of the top hitters in the Boston farm system. Murton was traded to the Cubs in 2004, along with baseball star Nomar Garciaparra. He debuted with the Cubs on July 8, 2005, and finished his rookie season with a batting average of .321, seven home runs, 14 runs batted in (RBI’s) and two stolen bases.

“Matt Murton was one of the best baseball players I had the honor to play with while at Georgia Tech,” said Matthew Swain, Milligan College assistant to campus ministry and FCA mentor. “His Christian example is equally as great as his baseball skills.”

The Milligan College FCA chapter meets monthly and was established to challenge, encourage and nurture athletes in their faith and life together at Milligan. Any student at Milligan is invited and encouraged to attend the meetings.
