Instrument drive for Baghdad Symphony slated

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (April 14, 2005) — Later this month local residents will have the opportunity to help the Baghdad Symphony in Iraq once again resonate its local music hall with song. Despite the violence that has taken place in Iraq, the Baghdad Symphony continues to practice; however, they are in dire need of musical instruments.

Milligan College’s chapter of the Music Educators National Conference (MENC), under the direction of assistant professor of music, Dr. Kellie Brown, is asking local instrumentalists to donate their new and old instruments, scores and repair sets to the Orchestral Instruments for Baghdad drive to be held Saturday, April 23, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Seeger Chapel on the Milligan College campus.

The instruments that are collected will be sent directly to Iraq in late May and will enable the Baghdad Symphony to perform for Iraq’s upcoming inauguration.

“We live in a country that is so blessed,” said Brown. “It is incredible that we are given this opportunity to be able to give back.”

Donors are asked to attach with the instrument a short note to the unknown symphony member. All postage and packaging required for shipment will be paid by MENC.
