Rick Simerly to perform with the Johnson City Symphony

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (November 11, 2003) — Rick Simerly, Milligan College associate professor of music, will join with the Johnson City Symphony Orchestra to present “All That Jazz,” the symphony’s second subscription of the season. The concert is at Seeger Chapel on the campus of Milligan College on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 8:00 p.m.

Simerly will also be accompanied by a jazz quartet, including the father/son duo of Charles Goodwin on piano, Fred Goodwin on bass, and Eddie Dalton on drums.

The concert includes Haydn’s whimsical composition The Clock, Kabalevsky’s Comedians’ Gallop and Ponchielli’s familiar tune Dance of the Hours, which was borrowed by Allan Sherman for his 1960s hit Hello Muddah, Hello Fadduh. Songs featuring the jazz quartet include I’m Getting Sentimental Over You, Embraceable You and Georgia on my Mind.

Simerly is a native of East Tennessee and travels across the country conducting musical clinics, workshops and performances. He has performed extensively with many artists, such as the bands of Tommy Dorsey and Woody Herman, The Four Tops, the O’Jays, Bob Hope and Red Skelton. He has released two albums.

Tickets for the concert are available at the door or by calling 423-92-Music. They are $15 for adults, $7 for students, or free for Milligan College students.

A free shuttle service will be provided from Colonial Hills Retirement Center at 6:45 p.m., Appalachian Christian Village at 7 p.m., and City Hall at 7:15 p.m.
