Renowned photographer to give gallery talk

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (September 19, 2003) — ETSU professor of photography Mike Smith, who was awarded a Guggenheim fellowship in 2001, will give a gallery talk about his photographs of East Tennessee and Appalachia in the Milligan College Art Gallery at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, Sep. 22.

Smith completed his graduate course work at Yale University and has taught photography at ETSU since 1981 in the department of Art & Design.

In 2001, Smith was awarded a fellowship by the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. He was given a year off at ETSU to pursue his own work for this purpose.

“Only a handful of photographers are given the opportunity every year,” Smith commented.

Several museums across the country have purchased his work. Those museums include: Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, the Metropolitan Museum in New York and the Chicago Art Institute. His work has also been featured in the Wall Street Journal, the New Yorker and the New York Times.

“His work is amazing and remarkable, and I appreciate him taking the time to come here,” said Alice Anthony, assistant professor of art at Milligan. “He was my teacher so I respect him and look forward to introducing him to my students.”

Students from the campus as well as people in the community are invited to come hear Smith speak about his work from this area. The Milligan College Art Gallery is located in the lower level of Derthick Hall.
