Established in 1922, Alpha Chi began as a scholarship society whose purpose is to promote academic excellence and ideal character among undergraduate college students from all academic disciplines. Presently, more than 280,000 members have been inducted into Alpha Chi nationwide. Through Alpha Chi, students have the opportunity to participate in regional and national conventions, compete for scholarships, offer scholarly programs to the campus community, and participate in service projects.

The name Alpha Chi is derived from the initial letters of the Greek words ALETHEIA, meaning truth, and XAPAKTHP, meaning character. Alpha Chi is a prestigious society consistent with Milligan’s vision of promoting academic excellence and character. Milligan’s chapter of Alpha Chi’s motto is taken from the Gospel of John: “Ye shall know the truth and the truth shall set you free” (John 8:32 KJV).
