Milligan coach helps mother nab Grammy nomination

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, TN (January 10, 2002) – Milligan cross country and track coach Chris Layne of Johnson City certainly has something to be proud of this New Year. Layne’s mother, Georgia S. Lucking, of Satellite Beach, Fla., was recently nominated for a Grammy award for her children’s music education program, “Little House of Music.”

Layne was involved in the creation of his mother’s project, co-writing the song, “I’m Drug Free,” which emphasizes to children the dangers of drugs. Layne also serves on the project’s Board of Directors.

“This is a major achievement and I am extremely proud to be involved with it,” said Layne. “I’m so proud of what my mother has accomplished. She has put over 15 years of time and effort into Little House of Music, and it just goes to show how determination and hard work pay off.”

Layne learned well from his mother about determination and hard work. In only his third year at the helm of Milligan’s cross country and track program, Layne was named the 2001 NAIA Region 11-12 Indoor Coach of the Year and has sent six athletes to the national championships. Overall, Layne has coached seven national championship qualifiers, 22 conference finalists, and 11 conference champions while at Milligan and as an assistant coach at East Tennessee State University.

While in college, Layne was named to the All-Southern Conference and All-Ohio Valley Conference Teams in the 400 meters and 800 meters. In 1992, as a member of the Middle Tennessee State University 4 x 200 meter relay team, he achieved a world ranking by Track and Field News. After college, he competed in the 1996 USA Indoor Track and Field Championships in the 4 x 400 meter relay. He is currently finishing his master’s degree in sports management at East Tennessee State University and continues to serve as a coaching consultant to post-collegiate athletes.

Lucking, whose project is up against projects from Sony, Sesame Street, and Elmo, will be joining world-famous recording artists and performers at this year’s 44th edition of the Grammy awards, to be held on February 24 in Los Angeles.
