Dr. L. Caitlin (Reeves) Jorgensen
Current Residence: Hamden, CT
Graduated from Milligan: 1994
Major: English & Humanities double major; Bible minor
Current occupation: Lecturer in English, Yale University
Education
Just over six years after she graduated from Milligan, Jorgensen earned her Ph.D. in English from the University of South Carolina. She now lectures at Yale University. The best thing about working at Yale, she says, is working with students and her colleagues. Her husband Larry is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Philosophy. Their daughter, Lillian Rose, is two years old.
Inspiration
“The faculty at Milligan gave me a wonderful model of Christian academic pursuit, so I never doubted that you could be a believer and an academic. They also helped me to value extracurricular concerns, like church and family, which have helped me to value those things in my own life.”
Servant-leadership
While in the classroom, Jorgensen believes that her role as a professor and as a servant-leader calls her to listen carefully to her students views. In an arena of academia which demands the outpouring of many different viewpoints, Jorgensen aims to serve her students by evaluating their opinions, not simply demanding her own. “If I want to serve my students, I need to listen carefully to what they're trying to say and look carefully at how they're saying it,” she said.
Discipline
During her senior year, Jorgensen “created quite a scandal by being disciplined by the College.” Although this was a difficult experience for Jorgensen, she reflects on this experience as one of the most important ones in her young adult life. “I learned that, to fully participate in a community, I need to be willing to submit to that community.”
