Milligan College is pleased to have faculty and staff serving as mentors (academic advisors, social directors, and all-around helpers!) for new students during their first year at Milligan.

2009-10 Mentors:

John Paul Abner, 423.975.8013
Dr. Abner received his PhD from the University of Florida in Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology. He co-mentors with his wife, Pam, and they have 3 kids, a horse (Red), and a dog (Sugar). Dr. Abner has a small private practice and consults with the East Tennessee Center of Excellence for Children in State Custody where he is trying to help improve services to foster children by training area therapists in Parent Child Interaction Therapy.  He is researching the efficacy of a new treatment for autistic spectrum disorders.  He is an avid hiker, volleyball, and basketball player.  
Alice Anthony, 423.461.8970
Professor Alice Anthony completed her master of fine arts in photography at East Tennessee State University, and pursues her professional interests in the classroom at Milligan and by developing the artistic skills of youth in the community. She also pursues ongoing photo projects and regularly displays her art in local and national venues. Professor Anthony and her husband are big fans of Elvis, and make regular pilgrimages to Graceland. And she has a fat cat—a beloved member of the family.
Curtis Booher, 423.461.8778
Curtis Booher serves at Milligan College as Assistant Professor of Bible and Christian Ministries. Prior to teaching, Curtis worked as a youth minister for 20 years. Curtis graduated from Milligan College and earned the Master of Divinity degree from Emmanuel School of Religion where he is currently working on the Doctor of Ministry degree. He enjoys golf, baseball, Tennessee football, a good movie and a good book. Curtis learned the art of storytelling while sitting under a shade tree listening to his grandfather and while trying to talk his way out of trouble as a kid. His favorite roles in life are those of husband and father. He and his wife Rita, along with their two daughters Abbey and Maggie, live in Elizabethton, Tennessee.
David Campbell, 423.461.8674
Professor Campbell has a BS in Economics from James Madison University, followed by an MA and Ph.D. in Economics from George Mason University. Not to be outdone in the founding fathers department, David’s wife Emily has an MS in Clinical Exercise Science from George Washington University. They both live in Boones Creek with their daughter Lily, and two dogs Thatcher and Gator.
Carolyn Carter, 423.461.8670
With passions in database management, systems analysis and design, and web theory and design, Dr. Carter completed graduate studies from East Tennessee State University, University of Evansville, and then received her PhD from Virginia Tech. Her husband, Milton, is Director of Lifelong Learning and teaches geography at Milligan. They have two spoiled cocker spaniels - Oreo and Cocoa.
Theresa Garbe, 423.461.8718
Mrs. Garbe has been Milligan's Director of Alumni Relations for the past ten years. She is a Milligan graduate herself with a Bachelor of Arts in Communications and Humanities-French, and she is just a few credits (and a thesis) away from earning the Master of Divinity at Emmanuel School of Religion. She has been married for 16 years and has three children.
John Jackson, 423.461.8794
Dr. John Jackson hales from out west by way of Durham, NC, and has settled into the smooth life of northeast TN. He serves as professor of Bible and humanities and completed his doctoral work in Old Testament studies at Duke University. John's wife, Mary serves as Milligan's reference librarian (students will all get to know her in their composition courses) and is typically known as a great source of baked goods for our students. They share a love of cooking and travel.  They live in Elizabethton with their two children.
Diane Junker, 423.461.8907
Hailing from Minnesota, Dr. Junker started off her college learning right here at Milligan, receiving her Bachelor of Science. She went on to receive her Master's in Nursing from the University of Tennessee, and PhD in Chemistry from the University of Pittsburgh. Her hobbies include cooking, sewing, decorating, and reading (remember-- all chemists can cook!).

Dr. Mahan earned his Master of Accountancy (Tax) from the University of Georgia and Doctorate of Business Administration from Argosy University. He is married and has four daughters. He is running his first marathon in October and has the distinct privilege of being repeatedly accused by the president of stealing the Milligan Buffalo.
Lori Mills, 423.461.8663
Dr. Mills completed her Ph.D. in clinical psychology at the University of Louisville and now teaches in that field here at Milligan. Her particular academic interests include the theory and practice of counseling, positive psychology, and sport psychology. She and her husband happily have their hands full with three boys. While a student here at Milligan, Dr. Mills played both basketball and volleyball is now a wannabe triathlete. Her attainment of this goal is in doubt, however, as she is the worst runner in her family. Even her 5-year-old has beaten her by recently running a 3K faster than her mom!
Bruce Montgomery, 423.461.8776
PhD in Interpersonal and Public Communication from Bowling Green State University, along with a Master of Divinity from Christian Theological Seminary, Dr. Montgomery has worked in Communications at Milligan for 14 years, and before that worked 27 years as a preaching minister. He is also a former chaplain for the New York Yankees AAA team. The Columbus Clippers, and was State Director of FCA in Ohio. He is married and has three children and seven grandchildren. 
Shauna Nefos, 423.461.8735
Shauna Nefos is the Director of Residence Life and Housing. She has completed her graduate degree in College Student Affairs from Azusa Pacific University in Azusa, California. She is passionate about many aspect of experiential education including: helping students develop their strengths, assisting them to become effective leaders, and challenging them to be active and responsible members of the campus community. When she is not blindfolding her RAs, making them participate in any number of team building activities, you can find her training for her next half marathon, hiking the AT, or drinking massive amounts of coffee.
Carrie Swanay, 423.461.8795
Graduating from East Tennessee State University with a Bachelor's in Communications/Broadcasting, again from ETSU with a Master's in Instructional Technology, and finally from Virginia Tech with a PhD in Instructional Technology with an emphasis in Digital media, Dr. Swanay loves working with all aspects of multimedia. She is currently researching and purchasing new equipment for the Communications Area Broadcast Studio and the expansion of a new MAC Multimedia lab. These purchases also include equipment necessary for students to participate in video streaming productions of campus events . She also has two pugs (Bess- for Bess Truman, and Ellie- for Eleanor Roosevelt) and enjoys riding her 750 Honda (not Harley!). She is also looking forward to an upcoming cruise to Alaska.

Ted Thomas, 423.461.8996
Prof. Ted N. Thomas is a modern European historian who specializes in Church--State conflicts in Nazi Germany. In addition to history courses, he teaches sophomore Humanities and German. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Maryland, having completed his undergraduate work at Pepperdine University. He and his wife Jane-Anne (married 40 years!) spent nearly seven years in Heidelberg, Germany, where Prof. Thomas preached and taught in the Bibelschule Heidelberg. The Thomas family likes to sing and make things grow in the garden. Prof. Thomas is currently in an interim ministry with Oak Grove Christian Church.

Professor Whitney hales from New Hampshire, the completed his undergraduate degree in biochemistry at Messiah College. He continued his education by earning a PhD in genetics from Penn State. Milligan was very pleased to welcome Dr. Whitney to campus in the Fall of 2008. He and his wife of eight years have two (soon to be three) boys. When he's not in the classroom or with his family, you'll find Dr. Whitney playing guitar, sports and video games.

SURVIVAL TIPS FOR SUCCESS

• Make time management a priority

• Obtain, read, and refer to college catalog.

• Be responsible for individual academic performance.

• Know where to get help (Hint: Student Success Office)

• Build a support system away from home.

• Get to know administrators, faculty, and staff beyond the classroom.

• Apply for financial aid early and let it be an ongoing process until graduation.

• Establish boundaries with roommates.

• Get "connected" early. Get involved in extra-curricular activites, but know your limit.

• Use good judgment and have fun in college.
