Student Success
First Year Mentoring Program: Info for
Parents (pdf)
Milligan’s Mentoring
Program is a vital part of a student’s development and academic
success. We pair each new student with a faculty mentor, based
on the student’s academic interest. If the student hasn’t
decided on a major yet, the mentor will help guide the student
through the core curriculum and career assessments to help
discern God’s call. Your student’s mentor will help him/her
successfully navigate through the first year as a college
student. From there, your student will be ready to work closely
with an academic advisor in a specific major, who will lead your
student through college to graduation. Here’s what you can
expect from our mentors:
Academic Advising
Mentors provide academic advising for new students
throughout the first year at Milligan. Formal advising sessions
take place:
-
At summer
Connections
-
During Welcome Week
-
One month after
classes begin
-
Immediately after
fall midterm grades are posted
-
During
pre-registration for spring classes
-
As needed for
individual advising concerns throughout the academic year
-
Students transition
to permanent advisors prior to spring break of their first
year
Group Social
Activities
Mentors organize a number of group social activities
throughout the year. These activities serve to help your student
acclimate to the campus and the community:
-
At Connections —
you’ll enjoy the opportunity to get to know your student’s
mentor at dinner.
-
During Welcome Week
— your student will participate in many team events
-
In three or four
group activities throughout the year, including athletic
events, meals, community events and/or other activities of
interest to students
Personal Attention
Our mentors should be your student’s first stop when facing a
variety of questions. Mentors will be happy to either discuss or
refer students regarding issues such as:
How can parents
participate?

SURVIVAL TIPS FOR SUCCESS
• Make time management a priority
• Obtain, read, and refer to college catalog.
• Be responsible for individual academic performance.
• Know where to get help (Hint: Student Success Office)
• Build a support system away from home.
• Get to know administrators, faculty, and staff beyond the classroom.
• Apply for financial aid early and let it be an ongoing process until graduation.
• Establish boundaries with roommates.
• Get "connected" early. Get involved in extra-curricular activites, but know your limit.
• Use good judgment and have fun in college. |
