The SGA held a meeting Oct. 2 to go over the results of the surveys passed out during the previous week. A total of 235 students completed the survey during the Open Forum conducted outside Derthick which asked for opinions on certain events around campus. SGA plans to use these results and work with fellow students to improve campus life.

When asked how to best improve Spiritual Formation Program events, most students said they would like to receive SFP credit for attending sports events.

The majority of students said the best way to advertise for upcoming events on campus is to illustrate advertisements using sidewalk chalk.

Of the activities students would like to see on campus, a video game tournament featuring either Halo or FIFA was the most popular. Also card games such as Texas hold ‘em, poker and euchre were mentioned.

SGA Freshman President Josh Little said SGA had been discussing creating a “Snow Mountain” and would possibly cover one of the many hills on campus in some form of improvised or fake snow so students could go sledding or participate in other outdoor activities this winter.

Students expressed interest in other activities as well. Some students would like to participate in events such as paintball, more dances (specifically multi-cultural and contra type dances), bonfires, movie nights, dorm competitions, an obstacle course, a waterslide, better intramurals such as Ultimate Frisbee or Flag Football and more concerts.

Movie nights at the Drive-In or the Bonnie Kate, dancing, horseback riding, theme park trips and bowling were also deemed worthy of consideration.

Many students were interested in small group Bible studies as well as better chapels and convocations. Campus Minister Nathan Flora said the Spiritual Formation Program is working on implementing small group bible studies during spring semester with faculty and staff participation. The six-week study on diversity issues and relations which began Thursday was a partial response to this desire.

“I agree with the students that there’s a need and an interest for small groups,” Flora said.

The Cross-Cultural Missions Committee holds prayer nights on the second and last Thursday of each month. Flora said he would be interested in bringing these prayer vigils back if students showed and interest.

“We’ve done them in the past,” Flora said, “but this year, based upon how students responded to them last year, there are currently none scheduled.”

“SGA plans to follow the survey as closely as possible, but some of these ideas have to be passed on to other campus organizations like the Campus Activities Board,” Freshman Class Representative Matthew Hicks said.

Hicks added SGA will work very hard to implement some of the ideas student government can make possible.
