Milligan College students interested in technology may consider earning a degree in Computer Information Systems, or CIS.
The CIS program is directed towards students who are acquiring a liberal arts education and wish to obtain management level jobs rather than lower paying computer technician jobs.
“The CIS program began at Milligan College in the early 1980s and has evolved” said Professor of CIS Carolyn Carter.
According to Carter, the CIS degree evolved because “business executives began to rely more and more on computer systems to aid them in making operational and strategic decisions concerning the direction their businesses should progress.”
There are currently 26 students at Milligan pursuing a CIS major, and these students have had the opportunity to program robots, build computers and work with networks. Each student is required to complete an internship worth three credit hours.
Senior Peter Thomas has already completed one internship and is currently working on another.
“The first was with Christian Children's Homes of Tennessee in Elizabethton,” Thomas said. “I designed and developed the organization's main Web site, and I learned a lot from it. The internship that I am working on now is for a church back in my hometown.”
Thomas plans on entering the workforce as a Web Developer and eventually hopes to run his own business doing Web Design and Development.
Sophomore Brian Goad is also working toward a degree in CIS.
“The small Christian college atmosphere was a good fit for me,” said Goad. “I could have gone to a tech college back home, but I didn’t think it was really for me.”
Goad has no specific plans as to what he wishes to do with his degree.
“I figure that God will eventually lead me to the places he wants me to be in regards to my career on my journey in life,” said Goad
Students can choose to gain a major in CIS with either a Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree. Students majoring in CIS are to take 39 required hours, while students seeking a minor are only required to fulfill 27 required hours.
Students interested in pursuing a major or minor in CIS, in taking a class or two, or just learning more about the CIS area in general should contact Carter or Teresa Carter.
