Rising sophomores, juniors, and seniors all wielded their pens on Wednesday, determining the fate of the 20 candidates running for next year’s offices. Of those 20, 18 made the cut.

SGA elections held Wednesday went well, despite the change of time and location from previous years. Students were asked to cast their votes in Derthick throughout the day rather than during a designated convocation service.

Although fewer students voted this year, Director of Student Life Kim Parker believes there were various factors besides the relocation that could have affected the number of votes, one being the small number of students running for offices.

“Some students may have not felt the need to vote,” Parker said.

However, many students responded positively to the recent elections, despite the changes.

“I heard a lot of people saying they like the voting in (Derthick),” said former parliamentarian senior Ryan Alcott.

As with every new election, students always look for a change.

“I would like to see SGA plan more events for student involvement of non-traditional and commuting students” freshman Jason Spencer said.

“I would like to see more total campus activities, more than just Wonderful Wednesday,” Rebekah Cunningham said.

Recently elected SGA members have several goals for the student body that they hope to accomplish throughout the upcoming year.

“I'm looking forward to continuing some of the current projects, as well as starting new ones” said sophomore Maggie Blankenship, executive council president. “I'm hoping to see the community aspect of Milligan strengthened by bringing more students together.”

“My goal for this upcoming year as senior class president is to raise SGA awareness amongst the students and increase senior class participation in SGA events,” Crystele Woodlee said.

“As junior class president, I hope to voice the concerns of my class and to plan an awesome Junior/Senior,” Jackie Libby said.
