The Milligan College golf team came out on top at their home tournament Wednesday at the Elizabethton Golf Club. Seven teams competed in the Milligan Invitational, with the Buffs finishing first with a four-man total score of 309.
Appalachian Athletic Conference rival Union College took a second place team finish 19 strokes behind Milligan with a 328.
Junior Matt Barefoot finished first overall in the tournament with a 76. In a three-way tie, sophomore Grayson Patton, junior Matt Ognie and Union’s Sammy Lee each earned a second place finish with scores of 77. Senior Aaron Jessee completed the Buffs’ team score with a 79, taking a 5th place finish.
Though his score did not count toward the team’s total, which only takes the four highest scores, junior Ryan Morris also competed and shot a score of 83.
Freshmen Jay Bernhardt and Michael Woods competed as individuals. Bernhardt finished in the overall top 10 with an 81 and 83, respectively.
“We usually win our home match,” Woods said. “We really have an advantage since Elizabethton is our home course and you have to play that course a few times to get used to it.”
Woods expects Milligan’s golf team to continue their winning ways throughout the season, especially against conference teams.
“We think we have a good chance to win the conference this year,” Woods said.
The Buffs’ golfers tee off next in the Southeast Kentucky Invitational in London, Ky. next Thursday and Friday. This 36-hole event will feature 20 of the region’s top college teams.
