The Milligan College baseball team suffered two losses in
its doubleheader against Pikeville College at Anglin Field on Friday.
In the first game, the Bears took the lead early on, scoring two runs by the
second inning. Milligan came back to tie the score in the bottom of the second.
Junior Justin Sauceman hit a home run, the last run for the Buffaloes, putting
Milligan in the lead 3-2.
Senior left fielder Dave Rusaw had one RBI, while junior first baseman Kory
Kinnear and freshman designated hitter Tyler Turner each had one hit.
Junior pitcher Brett Seybert started for the Buffaloes, striking out two and
walking one.
Senior pitcher Beau Alford relieved Seybert during the fifth inning, walking
one, striking out two and hitting two of the Bears’ batters.
J.P. Penland, senior pitcher, watched as the Buffaloes fought to combat the
Bears’ tough offense.
“It seemed like the harder we threw, the harder they hit,” said Penland.
The Buffaloes were no match for the Bears’ strong offense, as Pikeville went on
to score three runs in the fifth inning and two in the seventh, bringing the
final score to 7-3.
“We aren’t hitting that well right now, but that will come,” said junior pinch
runner Andy Chrisman.
Game two ended in another loss for Milligan.
In a promising first three innings, Milligan pulled ahead 4-0 until Pikeville
stole and kept the lead at the bottom of the sixth with a final score of 9-5.
Senior pitcher Jim Iademarco started the Buffaloes with four straight scoreless
innings. Iademarco gave up one hit in the first four innings and four runs in
the fifth before Alford took over for one inning, giving up the final five runs.
Sophomore pitcher Adam Snyder struck out two batters in the sixth inning and
freshman Rob Tallant pitched a scoreless seventh inning.
The Buffaloes showed proficient hitting led by Rusaw, who went 2-3. Sophomore
second baseman Drew Anders had one RBI in the second inning.
Alford, junior catcher Cody Cannon and junior right fielder Todd Sangid each hit
singles, while Kinnear doubled in the fifth inning.
“I think the biggest problem right now is we’re not putting the game together,”
said junior catcher Chris Gordon.
“We get out-hit by teams we shouldn’t be out-hit by and out-pitched by teams we
shouldn’t be out-pitched by,” said head coach Bernie Young.
