Half-price appetizers from Applebee’s have always been a hit among Milligan
students. Based on the number of Milligan students seen at the new Elizabethton
location each week, the appetizers seem to have grown even more popular.
“It’s just a chill atmosphere where you can go with friends, spend three bucks
and get some good food,” said senior Randall Moore.
Before the Elizabethton location was built last semester, students usually
flocked to the Johnson City Applebee’s, Perkins or Bennigan’s, a restaurant that
closed in 2003.
“(Bennigan’s) had a few deals like half-priced appetizers and desserts but
closed during my sophomore year because they didn’t have enough business,” said
senior Kim Hughston.
Milligan students usually frequent Applebee’s at least a few times a week. The
half-priced appetizers deal “seems to be the draw” for students, according to
Elizabethton Applebee’s Restaurant Manager Michael, who declined to give his
last name.
“(Milligan students) tend to come in anywhere from 10:30 p.m. to midnight or 1
a.m.,” he said.
The half-price menu consists of the boneless buffalo wings and “mi queso, su
queso,” and other usual suspects in the appetizer lineup.
With the Elizabethton location near the school, 10 to more than 40 Milligan
students can be seen there over the course of a week.
Applebee’s isn’t the only food establishment with deals to fit with a student’s
wallet. Chick-Fil-A has a “Church Bulletin Night” every Monday anytime after 6
p.m., which offers a sandwich or nuggets, fries and a drink for $2.83 with a
church bulletin. Arby’s now offers a kid’s meal for $2.49 every Tuesday, and
Little Caesar’s offers a large one-topping pizza for $4.99 every day.
Because of these deals, some students now eat off campus more than they used to.
“I am prone to spend more off campus if there are good deals,” said sophomore
Micah Antanaitis. “I generally only eat out if there is a deal that I’m aware
of, so I end up spending more off campus as a result.”
