Paintings, photographs and sculptures by Milligan art students went on display Friday night at the opening of the third annual “Art from the Buffalo School” at the Nelson Fine Art Gallery in downtown Johnson City.

Dick Nelson, the gallery owner, allows Milligan students to show their art work at his gallery because he knows the students need a way to publicize their artwork.

“It is hard for students to get their work in a gallery,” said Alice Anthony, assistant professor of art at Milligan College. “It is hard for any person that is not known to get their work out there.”

According to sophomore photography student Andy Frost, 20 to 25 students have at least one piece of artwork included.

“Six students from the fine arts department took the pieces to the gallery and determined which pieces were displayed based on space,” Frost said. “We couldn’t put up everything because there wasn’t enough room.”

“It’s a good thing to see your artwork displayed,” said sophomore art minor Micah Antanaitis. “I think it is fun to see everyone work together and it’s encouraging.”

About 200 people attended the show on Friday night.

“Art from the Buffalo School” will be on display until the end of February. Nelson Art Gallery is open until 5 p.m. every weekday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday.
