Do you ever get tired of that supposedly deluxe food that mid-priced eateries like Applebees charge an arm and a leg for?

My new Jordanian friend, Monah, told me she can’t eat in the large commercial chains because “all of their food comes in boxes which are heated in the microwave.” Instead, Monah eats at her brother’s new restaurant, The Creek.

Monah and her brother Fred are members of a Jordanian Christian family who moved to the area six months ago from New Jersey where Fred managed a large Mediterranean Restaurant.

Monah’s husband describes the Creek as a “family-run, clean, high-quality restaurant that serves Middle Eastern and Mediterranean dishes.” He is impressed by Fred’s ability to add those special spices that really make the difference.

Jordanians are not the only ones who are head-over-heels for The Creek. Members of Hopwood praise the food and hope that the restaurant never closes.

The menu includes something for everyone. It ranges from classic American favorites like burgers, chicken fingers, and buffalo wings to savory homemade pizzas that are a notch above the mass-produced grease pans college kids are accustomed to.

Other specialty dishes include Houmas, baba ganouge, falafel, tabooleh, zater bread, stuffed grape leaves, musakan, and chicken or pork souvlaki over rice, and shawarma.

Mindy Blosser, member of Hopwood and wife of Assistant Professor of Art Nick Blosser, said her favorite dish is the gyro, which she describes as an authentic, delicious blend of lamb, salted onions, tomatoes and garlic yogurt sauce.

In addition, ice cream scoops and milk shakes are always available.

Not only is the food tasty, but Fred and his family are very hospitable. Mervat, the main server, knows most of her customers by name.

Located at 1941 Milligan Highway, The Creek is closer than any restaurant. It is on the left just beyond the underpass going toward Elizabethton. Their phone  number is (423) 543-0500.

Applebees can do without you. Eat at The Creek and you’ll do more than fill your stomach. Your money will support a local Christian family who is trying to stay afloat in a service being overrun by corporations.
