The Milligan College men’s soccer team swept Harris Stowe College (Mo.) 6-0 Tuesday night to open the home soccer season.

The women’s soccer team shut out Southern Wesleyan University (S.C.) Tuesday night with a final score of 4-0.

Junior Sarah Sereno started the action with the first goal eight minutes into the game from a cross-field assist by freshman Amy Boyd. Sophomore Dagmar Yr Arnardottir scored the Lady Buffs second goal for the night off a free kick in the 16th minute.

Milligan faced a few moments of anxiety during the 21st minute when a red card was called on freshman goalkeeper Rosanna Couture for fouling on a goal-scoring opportunity. She was replaced by sophomore Melissa Thompson who held off the Lady Warriors. As a result of the penalty call, the Lady Buffs had to finish out the game one man down.

“Although we started off well, it was kind of a downer when Rossana got a red card, but we pulled together because we knew we had to get the job done,” said sophomore Stephanie Junkin.

The last goal of the first half was scored in the final minute by Junkin off an assist from freshman Lauren Robinson.

In the second half, both teams struggled to get and keep possession of the ball, but Arnardottir closed out the game with another goal made in the 88th minute off an assist by Junkin.

“I think our team did really well adjusting to playing a man down for the remainder of the game,” said Sereno.

The win brings Milligan’s record to 4-1 for the season and 1-0 for the conference.

The Lady Buffs travel to Lookout Mountain, Ga. today to battle Covenant College.
