The Milligan College men’s soccer team brought its wining streak to three on Saturday by defeating Tennessee Wesleyan 2-1 in overtime. The Buffs improved their record to 5-3 overall and 3-0 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference.
Coach Dave Dixon said the difference in the game was that “we kept the ball and made them chase by possessing it.”
Early in the first half the Buffs were able to strike first with junior David Lilly’s goal that came from Caleb Bollman’s assist.
“The more games we play the better we get,” said Lilly. “Our relationships have grown through the games, allowing us to play faster, and the faster you play the more space you create allowing you to score.”
The Bulldogs’ James Cubillos tied the score in the 54th minute on a goal that just slipped by junior goalkeeper Jordan Fode. Fode was credited with two saves, bringing his total saves on goal to 33 for the season.
“Jordan Fode has been the man,” said Dixon. “He has played outstanding, and his leadership has been extremely valuable. We named him a captain last week because of his attitude and play.”
The Buffs had a breakaway goal called back for being offsides in the 71st minute that would have given them the lead, but instead the second half remained scoreless.
Dixon said a key stat for the season “is we aren’t giving bad goals away.” He added, “I think that is one of the most important factors in soccer. If you eliminate bad goals you have a chance to win every time you play.”
Senior Stuart Makinson scored the winning goal for the Buffs in overtime during the 95th minute.
“(The teams is) coming together very well,” said Dixon. “I have been pleased with their attitudes, and they seem to support each other on and off the field.”
Junior Justin Ciralsky contributes “time and playing together” as keys to how the team is coming together.
“It is the goal of the coaching staff to pour everything we have into both teams,” said Dixon. “We hope that the players see that we care about them and want to push them to their maximum potential.”
A chance to win is all the Buffs want.
“We have a great chance to compete for a conference championship and a trip to the regional tournament, and then anything can happen” said Dixon.
