The Milligan women’s soccer team defeated King College by a score of 2-1 in the first round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament Tuesday evening. The win improved Milligan’s overall record to 11-7-1.

“I thought it might have been the best we played all season,” coach Dave Dixon said.

Milligan struck first in the 37th minute with freshman Lauren Robinson’s goal that came from Dagmar Arnardottir’s assist.

“I thought that the girls played very well in the first half,” said Dixon. “We possessed the ball well; we were very dangerous in the attack and organized in the back.”

King was able to tie things up in the 52nd minute off of freshman Jarethea Adams’ breakaway goal.

“We always come into games with King knowing its going to be hard,” said junior Megan Elrod. “They had a lot of fan support and a couple quick players.”

The Lady Buffs took the lead when Elrod connected with Arnardottir on an inbounds pass. That goal would prove to be enough to give Milligan the victory.

“The second half we started a bit on our heels, but we woke up a little after they scored and settled down and started to play again,” said Dixon.

“We didn’t want to go into (the game) thinking it was going to be easy just because we beat them last time,” said Elrod. “We knew they were going to play hard because that was their last game of the season if they lost.”

The Buffs were playing in a new 3-4-3 formation for this game. “This was a risk because we haven’t played that way all season,” said Elrod. “It seemed to work well.”

For freshman Amy Boyd this was her first post-season college game. “It was kind of like any other college game, but it was really intense though,” Boyd said.

Dixon hopes they “can put it together again on Friday” when the Lady Buffs play Covenant in the semifinals of the AAC Tournament.

“Right now our confidence is high because we showed in the King game what we are capable of doing,” said Boyd. “I think we’re anticipating the team to play well in the upcoming games.”
