With a new face for the director of intramurals, Jessica Carter has big plans for the future.
From flag football to ultimate Frisbee, intramurals is a way to fellowship with other students and participate in athletics without the tedious practice schedules.
“I love the competition and getting out there and being active,” said junior Christian Thompson, who plays softball, football, dodge ball, basketball and ultimate Frisbee.
Softball and beach volleyball, the sports that just completed their seasons, pulled in about 80 students. Not only do the athletes come out, but there are always spectators cheering on their friends.
“I'm involved because it's fun and competitive. And you get a free T-shirt when you win,” said Allison Murray, a senior who has been involved in intramurals since her freshman year. Murray has played almost every sport offered and enjoys every season.
This semester Carter is focusing on increasing the number of students who participate in the various activities.
“We plan on offering dodge ball, basketball, pingpong and chess for the remainder of this semester.” Carter said.
As the new director, Carter said she wants to make a difference and pull everyone out for the activities. Listening to the students and seeing what they like to do helps her decide which new sport to offer.
“I plan to start offering a larger variety of activities…on and off campus,” Carter said. “It’s always helpful to listen to the requests the students may have. That’s why we’re offering ultimate Frisbee this semester and a few new games for spring - water polo and cupz.”
Sign ups for all intramurals activities are available in the cafeteria on various days depending on the sport and in Carter’s office located in the Student Union Building.
