A somber atmosphere filled Milligan College on Wednesday afternoon as news spread that Steven A. Hunter, 21, died unexpectedly.
Hunter, a junior history major from Portsmouth, Ohio, was running with the tennis team in the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse when he suddenly collapsed shortly before 4:30 p.m.
Coach Holly, softball coach, and Erica Roggie, athletic trainer, administered CPR before an ambulance arrived. He was taken to Sycamore Shoals Hospital where he was pronounced dead. No further information is available at this time.
According to tennis coach Rich Aubrey the team was supposed to work out on their own that day, but Ron Worrell, soon-to-be head tennis coach, was in the field house. The team had run a mile at about normal pace. Aubrey said that Hunter usually finished in the front and that he was in good shape. There were no indications of any health problems.
Several students and faculty were at the hospital when the announcement was made. These faculty included Hunter’s mentor, Lee Fierbaugh, as well as Dean Mark Fox, President Don and Clarinda Jeanes, Aubrey, Worrell, Campus Minister Nathan Flora and Director of Student Life Kim Parker. The tennis team was among over 25 students who gathered at the hospital with staff.
“There was a lot of support there,” Aubrey said.
The funeral will be held on Sunday at Christ Community Church in Hunter’s hometown of Portsmouth, Ohio. Visitation hours will be held from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. with the funeral immediately following.
