Milligan students had the opportunity to give back to the community Tuesday as Milligan held its third annual Day of Serving. Students honored and remembered Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on this day by serving the community surrounding Milligan.
Beth Anderson, director of the Institute for Servant Leadership, challenged students in convocation to make Martin Luther King Jr. Day a “day on and not a day off.”
“We choose to remember Dr. Martin Luther King by serving,” said Dr. Pat Magness, professor of humanities and English.
Students accomplished this by participating in different service projects throughout the Tri-Cities area.
Three hundred students signed up to participate in 18 organized activities available to students according to Amanda Ruble, assistant for the Institute for Servant Leadership.
The Photography Club did a service project at Fantasia Farms and Crumley House Rehabilitation Center where they cleaned up and worked on the farm doing manual labor.
Many other organizations and clubs worked together doing service projects. The Men’s Soccer Team went to the Johnson City Senior Living center where they cleaned trophies, organized supply rooms and built relationships with senior citizens by participating in dance instruction offered to the residents.
The day also opened up opportunities for students to go back and serve again..
