The Lady Buffs’ basketball team, battling to remain on pace with Appalachian Athletic Conference leader Bryan College, defeated the Lady Bulldogs of Union College Saturday night at the Steve Lacy Fieldhouse.
After allowing Union to start the game on a 7-2 run, Milligan junior Candace Shelton and senior Elizabeth Henter provided a spark off the bench to put the Lady Buffs in the lead at halftime, 34-31.
An impressive second half, sparked by freshman Leah Anderson’s new career high of 23 points, allowed Milligan to extend the lead.
Anderson finished the game with eight rebounds.
Fellow freshman Rikki Baughman and Milligan’s 2005-2006 leading scorer, Leah Seevers, contributed strong scoring performances with 18 and 15 points, respectively.
Leading the way for Union was Alison Fowler, who scored 16 points.
Milligan out rebounded Union by a count of 35-26 and won the turnover battle, forcing 26 while committing only 15.
The victory improves Milligan’s overall record to 11-8 and their conference record to 9-2, good enough to remain just a half game behind conference leader Bryan College Lions, who remain perched atop the AAC at 10-2.
Union fell to 8-13 overall and 4-8 in the AAC with the loss.
